Secrets of the Mediterranean
Palma Cathedral, Palma, Majorca
Messina, Mount Etna, Sicily
Siena Cathedral, Siena, Italy
Discover the secrets of the Mediterranean on one of the most popular Western Mediterranean Cruises. You’ll visit secluded islands and evocative cities on this tour through lesser known destinations in Italy and Spain.
* The order of the itinerary may differ depending on your chosen departure date and airport.
Day 1 – Palma, Majorca
You’ll begin your Secrets of the Mediterranean cruise in Palma, the island of Majorca’s capital. You’ll enjoy a complimentary 15-minute transfer from the airport to your ship. Since you won’t depart until 10pm, there may be enough time to explore a little if you're lucky enough to have an early flight time.
The picturesque old town is just a 10-minute bus ride (or 30-minute walk) from the port. This is where you’ll find most of the attractions, including Bellver Castle and Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, the former home of the surrealist painter.
Day 2 – At Sea
This is the only day on the Secrets of the Mediterranean itinerary spent at sea. Make the most of everything your ship, Marella Discovery 2, has to offer. Sunbathe on the Veranda, an Adults Only deck, lounge by the pool or indulge in a treatment at the spa.
There’s a kids’ club and dedicated teens hangout spot, but the whole family will have fun playing mini-golf or checking out the gaming centre together.
The ship’s seven restaurants serve global cuisine, ranging from Italian to Pan-Asian. Fill your stomachs then end the night up on deck for a Movies by Moonlight screening.
Day 3 – Messina (for Mount Etna), Sicily
Time in port: 09:00 – 19:00
You’ll disembark in Messina, an elegant Sicilian city of honey-coloured buildings and piazzas. From the port, it’s less than 10 minutes’ walk to the centre of the action.
If you’re exploring independently, be in the Piazza del Duomo for midday. There’s a Norman citadel with the world’s largest mechanised clock there. When it strikes twelve, you’ll be treated to a tableau of angels and lions, re-enacting the city’s history.
A popular shore excursion is a trip to Mount Etna. You’ll learn more about this fascinating volcano, and have the chance to try wine made from grapes grown on its foothills.
Day 4 – Salerno (for Sorrento and Pompeii), Italy
Time in port: 07:00 – 19:00
Salerno is a city of colourful houses nestled into forested slopes. It’s just under a mile from the port to the centre. You can stroll along the palm tree lined promenade, or check out the traditional restaurants, cafés and medieval churches in the historic centre.
Marella Cruises offer a shore excursion for the one thing on everyones to do list! - Start at the coastal town of Sorrento where you'll be treated to 180 degree panoramic views of Naples Bay. It’s then around a 40-minute drive to Pompeii, the must see town that was buried under volcanic ash from an eruption almost 2000 years ago.
Day 5 – Piombino (for Siena and Pisa), Italy
Time in port: 09:00 – 19:00
The next stop on your Secrets of the Mediterranean Itinerary is Piombino, an underrated tourist destination with a well-preserved historic district. You can explore Piombino independently, but many people opt to take excursions to the nearby cities of Pisa and Siena.
Pisa is 1 hour 20 minutes’ drive away. Take a tour of this elegant city to see the famous leaning tour and other sights.
It takes 1 hour 40 minutes to get to Siena, but this gorgeous Tuscan city is worth the visit. You can go on a walking tour of the centre, marvelling at the impressive Gothic buildings, and trying Tuscan delicacies.
Day 6 – Porto Torres, Sardinia
Time in port: 09:00 – 16:00
This sun-kissed Sardinian town is easily explored on foot. Wander through piazzas lined with caramel-coloured buildings. The town also boasts some impressive ancient sites, including the Archaeology Park & Museum, where you can see the ruins of a Roman city.
There are also several shore excursions available if you want to explore further afield. Get a transfer to La Pelosa Beach, which rivals the Caribbean with its icing-sugar sand and glimmering turquoise water.
Day 7 – Roses, Spain
Time in port: 08:00 – 17:00
You’ll dock at Roses, a picturesque town with a 16th-century citadel. The town is built around the Bay of Roses, endorsed by The Most Beautiful Bays in The World organisation. Chances are you’ll spend most of your time on the beach.
However, if you’re an art buff, take the shore excursion to Figueres, 50-minutes' drive away. You’ll be able to take a look around the surreal Dalí Theatre-Museum, which boasts unique décor and iconic paintings.
Day 8 – Palma, Majorca
You’ll arrive back in Palma, where you can enjoy Marella Discovery 2's facilities until its time to disembark.
Transfers will take you back to the airport where we're sure you'll start to reflect on your last weeks memories.
