Parc Guell, Barcelona, Spain
The name of this cruise sums it up perfectly – you’re about to experience all of the Mediterranean’s gems.
With the Mediterranean Gems itinerary, you’ll take in cities steeped in history, white-sand beaches and top tourist attractions. And, they’re all close to the ports.
* The order of the itinerary may differ depending on your chosen departure date and airport.
Day 1 – Naples, Italy
Your ship doesn’t depart until 18:00, and the airport is only 30 minutes away. So if your flight times allow, make the most of your time in destination to enjoy the Royal Palace of Naples and Piazza del Plebiscito.
With a soundtrack of moped horns, Naples is a thrill for all the senses, packed with ancient architecture, cathedrals and churches to explore. And the pizza is so good people eat it on the go rather than waiting at tables.
You’re also only 30 minutes away from a visit to the time-frozen cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Alternatively, scale Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano you can climb in Europe.
Day 2 – At sea
After a day of exploration, it’s time to relax on board Marella Explorer 2. This is your only day at sea on the Mediterranean Gems itinerary, so get ready to indulge in all its great facilities.
The latest ship to enter the fleet, Marella Explorer 2, is adults-only and loaded with facilities. From restaurants to a Champneys Spa and Indigo, a chic bar-club-casino.
In the evening, head to Latitude 53 where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the ever-changing views as you sail from port to port. Decorated in a gold and grey colour scheme, the restaurant's sleek, modern interior is a stylish space to dine. After, head to the Broadway Show Lounge for some top-class evening entertainment.
Day 3 – Barcelona, Spain
Time in port: 08:00 – 18:00
Stroll down the promenade of La Rambla and enjoy the majestic architecture of the Sagrada Família. Explore this culturally rich city, stopping at authentic tapas bars on narrow cobbled streets for a spot of people watching over a sangria.
Barcelona is known as a city that breaks the mould, from its football team, which is known as ‘more than a club’, to its traditional Gothic quarter. Your time in Barcelona will be non-stop.
Day 4 – Toulon, France
Time in port: 09:00 – 18:00
With the feel of a traditional French town but with an extra splash of glamour, Toulon is a gateway to the Côte d’Azur.
Stylish St Tropez is an hour away by car, and the pastel and stone houses of Cassis, an idyllic fishing village, is just over 30 minutes away. When you’re surrounded by the beauty of this region, you’ll see how it so inspired Van Gogh and Cézanne.
For a romantic escape, this is the perfect spot – sit and pop champagne in the celebrity-studded harbours. Alternatively, for an authentic flavour of Provence, head to Bandol. Only 20 minutes from the port, you’ll find a palm-lined promenade packed with cafes and boutiques.
Day 5 – Livorno, Italy
Time in port: 07:00 – 19:00
Step off at Livorno to visit Florence and Pisa. Known as ‘the new Venice’, Livorno itself is a labyrinth of canals, waterways and bridges, too.
Florence, 90 minutes away, is one giant piece of artwork. Its historic streets are packed with museums, art galleries and picturesque plazas.
And the Tuscan treasure of Pisa is just over 30 minutes from port. Yes, it's home to the famous leaning tower, but the Borgo Stretto is a paradise for picking up some genuine Italian fashion and a few souvenirs for family back home.
Day 6 – Civitavecchia, Italy
Time in port: 07:00 – 19:00
Rome is a dream destination if you're travelling solo – it has so many things to see, do and explore. Just over an hour away from port, Rome is packed with ancient history, from the Colosseum to St Peter’s Basilica.
Rome really will bowl you over with its artistic splendour, historical wonder and culinary treats. The piazzas are a great place to sit back, enjoy the Italian wine and tuck into some of the greatest pizza and pasta dishes on Earth.
Day 7 – Olbia, Sardinia
Time in port: 08:00 – 16:00
After an action-packed adventure in Rome, the sandy beaches and virgin coves of Olbia, are an absolute tonic.
You could just chuck out a towel and relax on the beach. Or, if you’re an active traveller, there are plenty of ways to explore this tranquil spot. Bike rides take in charm-filled villages, while boat trips allow you to experience the French island of Corsica and the peaceful La Maddalena archipelago.
Day 8 – Naples, Italy
After a week on the Mediterranean Gems cruise, you’ll arrive back in Naples with an abundance of new memories. You’ll want to be back in a flash!
