Signaling the start of a period of upgrades and makeovers for the Hurtigruten cruise ship fleet, MS Spitsbergen’s sleek and stylish new look is inspired by Norwegian mountains, fjords and nature.
New gastronomic experiences are provided by the talented Norway’s Coastal Kitchen and a new onboard bakery and ice cream parlour that dishes up delicious snacks. Serving the largest collection of Norwegian spirits known to man, the new Explorer Lounge offers understated luxury surroundings and a world-class bar experience, with panoramic views of passing scenery.
With a new ocean-view gym and bubbling outdoor hot tub from which you can admire the views, relaxing is easy onboard MS Spitsbergen. When on land, choose from more than 50 exciting excursions, but back onboard rest assured you can unwind in peace and style. The ship has its own sauna, and with a passenger capacity of 320, there’s room for cabins to be comfortable as well as cool.
The ship’s new design will see her perfectly equipped for sailing in polar waters, with improved maneuverability allowing her to cruise even closer to all the beautiful natural sights that guests are keen to see. Her reduced emissions and fuel consumption mean that she’s closer to nature in more ways than one.
There is a wide range of comfortable cabins onboard, all with private bathrooms. You will be informed at check in when your cabin is ready for you. Please note that cabins on deck 5 with passenger access to outside areas may sometimes have an obstructed view due to other passengers walking past. Please ask the reservation team for advice on the best cabin location for you.
The Expeditions Suites are the most exquisite cabins on the ship. Situated on upper deck, you can enjoy the most comfortable suites on board. Inside you will find seating areas with TV, bathrooms with shower/wc and most of them have double beds. All of the suites offer cabin kits, which contains bathrobe, slippers and other beauty articles. Some of the suites do have more facilities than others.
Arctic Superior cabins are comfortable cabins situated on both upper and middle deck, where you can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. All the cabins have bathrooms with shower/wc. You will also find coffee and tea facilities in these cabins. Most of them have separate beds, where one can be turned into a sofa and some have double beds. Some of the cabins have more facilities than others.
Polar Outside cabins are situated on lower deck and they all have bathrooms with shower/wc. Most of them offer separate beds where one can be turned into a sofa, and others offer upper and lower berths. Some of the cabins have more facilities than others.
Polar Inside cabins are situated on lower deck and offer a cosy atmosphere. All cabins include bathrooms with shower/wc. Most of the cabins have separate beds where one can be turned into a sofa, and others offer upper and lower berths. Some of the cabins have more facilities than others.s.
Visiting 34 ports, Hurtigruten have an exceptional opportunity to get fresh produce from local suppliers everyday. This means delicious new and fresh ingredients, both from coastal and inland areas.
Based on the season's best ingredients, the chefs create either three-course dinners or lavish buffets. Being a coastal voyage, seafood dominates the menu, accompanied with fresh vegetables and delicately flavoured sauces. Each dinner ends with traditional desserts, like home-made cakes, puddings, berries or sorbet. Breakfast and lunch is served buffet style, while dinner is a set dinner.
Passengers are requested to go to the restaurant on embarkation to make their table reservation. The usual meal times are: breakfast from 08.00 to 10.00 hours (open sitting); lunch from 13.00 hours (open sitting); dinner from 18.00 hours (set seating). During high season, there may be several sittings, the times of which will be shown on board. Full board begins with a buffet dinner on departure from Bergen and ends with brunch on the arrival day back in Bergen. The food is Norwegian and breakfast is buffet style with a selection of cold meats, cheese, eggs, cereals and fruit. Lunch is the famous Cold Table with a choice of fish dishes, cold meats, salads, a selection of hot dishes, desserts and fruit. Dinner is a three-course set meal; there is not usually a choice of menu. Occasionally the Cold Table may be served in the evening and the set meal at lunch time. All vessels are fully licensed..
The à la carte menu is a dining experience out of the ordinary - a dinner made from ultra-premium produce from our local suppliers. For those who are taking a classic voyage, full board is included in the price, and you can upgrade to the à la carte option for a small fee.
Even if you don’t have full board, you are still welcome to order tge à la carte menu. On most of Hurtigruten ships, the à la carte menu will be served in separate areas of the restaurants. Enjoy two-, three, four- or five-course dinners, and choose from four different starters, five main courses, four desserts and our famous cheese. Additional wine and drinks packages are also available. You can only book the à la carte menu when you are on board
The Bistro sells light snacks and drinks and is open 24hours.
The emphasis onboard is on relaxation and discovery, and not the commercial entertainment that is so often a part of conventional cruises. Hertigruten’s aim is to get you closer to unique environments and to allow you to share the experience with your fellow travellers. Occasionally there may be some musical entertainment onboard in the evenings.
The Main Lounge, also hosting daily multimedia presentations and professional lectures by expert scientists and wildlife experts.
The Observation Lounge has slanted windows which provide 270° scenery views. The lounge is served by its own full bar. The Lounge’s outdoor area is traditionally called “Passenger Bridge”.
A small shop onboard sells Hurtigruten branded merchandise, hand-made Norwegian souvenirs, toys, special occasion gifts.
Keep yourself feeling fresh and active in the Fitness Room or sweating away the day in the sauna.
This modern gym is equipped with treadmills, exercise bikes, a rowing machine, a ping pong table, free weights.
Head to the sauna and relax in luxury.
Relax in the jacuzzis whilst floating past the scenery.
Enjoy a lecture on the ship's deck or in one of the conference rooms and learn something new.
There are often lectures and presentations held on deck out in the fresh air. These lectures and presentations are related to marine and coastal life. For example, there is a performance of "Arctic Circle Ceremony" or "Leaving the Arctic" rituals when crossing the Arctic Circle, cod tongue-cutting demonstrations and training on how to fillet a fish, all of which are led by local fishermen. There are other activities on board, such as hunting for the Northern Lights in winter or sleeping on deck under the midnight sun.
Of course, all of these activities and lectures are voluntary. If you wish to simply relax and enjoy the view of the ever-changing scenery, you are more than welcome to do so.
