Two of the biggest names in the cruise industry are inviting some even bigger names from the world of celebrity on board this year. Thomson Cruises have planned an exciting series of talks by key figures in politics, sport and science, while Cunard have some honoured guests lined up for two of their summer itineraries on board the Queen Mary 2.
If you want to gain some expert knowledge in-between those beach excursions, or you fancy hearing the fascinating stories of everyone from Midge Ure to Eddy ‘The Eagle’ Edwards while you cruise, read on to find out who you could be sharing a deck with this year…
Cunard’s celebrity guests
Historic cruise line Cunard recently announced that the Queen Mary 2 would be playing host to musician Midge Ure on its ‘Arctic Circle Discovery’ cruise in August this year.
Along with Sir Bob Geldof, Midge Ure was responsible for writing Band Aid charity record ‘Do they know it’s Christmas?’ in 1984. Holding an OBE, Midge is also a Grammy and Ivor Novello award winner and the man behind the hit single ‘Vienna’. The singer and activist will be giving two inspirational talks to lucky guests on his greatest passions: charity and music.
Later in the month, the iconic cruise ship will also welcome Sir Mervyn King, former governor of the Bank of England. With a long history of service at the Bank of England, Mervyn King also taught at Cambridge and Harvard Universities, before becoming LSE Professor of Economics in 1984. Hear his fascinating economic insights on board the Queen Mary 2’s Transatlantic crossing from Southampton to New York (20th -27th August).
Thomson Cruises line up the stars
The cruise ship will be a magnet for any football fans in August as it travels to Iceland and Norway with 1966 World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst on board. In fact, Thomson Cruises are presenting a good year for sporting-themed options, with talks from jockey Bill Champion and Eddy ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, the British ski jumper who won the nation over at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
Don’t fret if you’re more of a culture-vulture, as classical music presenter and expert Humphrey Burton CBE will be appearing on Thomson Cruises’ North Cape Discovery trip in June, while TV presenter Denise Welsh will be joining the May Baltic Explorer cruise to ports including Finland, Estonia and Russia.
If you’re looking to book a cruise with a difference, you’ll be spoiled for choice in 2014. Politics, music, sport and the arts are all covered by these guest speaker itineraries so no matter your interest, you’ll have a story to tell the folks back home on your return!
