The news that Strictly Come Dancing star Anton du Beke is to join TUI Discovery as a surprise guest on the ship’s maiden voyage is part of a whole string of celebrations surrounding this exciting launch.

TUI Discovery, previously known as Splendour of the Seas®, a Royal Caribbean® ship, had a grand christening in Palma on the 9th of June. Over the course of the next 18 months Thomson Cruises is set to relaunch its whole fleet under the TUI brand.

Part and parcel of these celebrations were renowned vocalist Jess Glynne, Managing Directors of both Thomson Cruises and TUI UK and Ireland and of course the person who keeps the passengers safe and steers the ship – Captain John Westgarth-Pratt.

The party took place on deck nine of the ship with performers from each of the destinations visited by the Thomson fleet putting on a grand spectacle, including Middle Eastern whirling dervishes, and Spanish bull puppets.

Designed by the creators of the London 2012 Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, Black Skull Creative, the launch party was suitably triumphant for the official naming and launch of TUI Discovery.

Entertainment is important

As well as appearing in person during TUI Discovery’s inaugural cruise, Anton Du Beke will also give virtual dance lessons – and this is only a hint of the first-class entertainment that passengers can expect as standard on the ship.

The Broadway Show Lounge is the place to go for an evening of fun. With an 800 plus capacity, audiences will be treated to a host of shows with 11 totally new presentations, including Beatz Interactive dance shows featuring hi-tech dance, complete with LED costumes.

Another novel feature onboard TUI Discovery is an open air cinema. Catch up with old favourites or watch the latest releases under the stars – blankets, hot chocolate and popcorn are also on offer to create a wonderful cinematic experience.

Casinos are cool

There’s also a casino onboard where you can throw dice, or chance your luck on a whole variety of games. You can also have lessons and learn how to improve your game and skills from experienced croupiers.

Still yearning for more entertainment – the Live Room is TUI Discovery’s flagship bar with a wide selection of beers on tap. The setting is spacious and contemporary, a wonderful venue to enjoy a drink.

Family friendly fun

Thomson Cruises has an enviable reputation for not only running a tight ship but also for being family friendly. With rock climbing activities, an outdoor movie screen, a parent and baby lounge as well as the Kids’ Club, which promises trips to go and greet the captain among its other attractions, kid’s fun is a focus on this ship. There are also two specially designated pools for children’s activities.

Splash is an interactive show designed for younger family members and there’s also a games room for them to visit as well.

Pampering pleasures

Ocean’s Spa and Beauty salon is designed to help you relax and unwind when on your cruise. As well as a luxurious full body massage, you can also indulge yourself with a facial or simply some delicious beauty therapy. Everyone deserves a bit of pampering when on holiday.

All bar none

Adults are also well catered for. Come 2017 the much vaunted All Inclusive drinks package is set to be introduced, but this isn’t to say that you can’t take advantage of the numerous onboard bars that are situated all around the ship.

Starting at the top – Deck 11 to be precise – a drink in Bar Eleven comes with fantastic views over the sea and the bar is transformed from an elegant cocktail lounge by day and evening to a vibrant atmospheric disco by night. Continuing the elegance theme – the captain hosts drinks in the Atrium, and this also the venue for cabaret and other entertainment.

Foodie heaven

Anyone taking a cruise over the summer of 2016 needn’t worry they’re going to go hungry. TUI Discovery continues with the Thomson reputation for fantastic catering. With Kora La leading the way with Pan Asian cuisine and a further seven venues for eating, this ship is a foodie’s delight.

With destinations including Corsica, Barcelona, Rome and Florence on the itinerary, anyone planning to take a cruise on the TUI Discovery is in line for a festival of treats both onboard and onshore.

In the words of Managing Director of Thomson Cruises, Helen Caron,”TUI Discovery is a real game changer for us and shows our commitment to delivering unforgettable holidays that are personalised for each of our customers.”

With the ship’s fantastic entertainment and hospitality passengers are certainly in for a wonderful cruise.
