Cruise giant Royal Caribbean has recently made clear its intentions to eliminate the use of single-use plastics throughout the ships in its fleet.

The global brand confirmed earlier in the month that it intends to reduce plastic use across all of its sub-brands, including Celebrity Cruises® and Azamara Club Cruises.

When will this happen?

President and Chief Executive Michael Bayley has yet to put a date on when it will be completely free of single-use plastics, but did confirm that investigations are now underway by a special team created within the organisation. “It won’t happen in three months” he admitted. But went on to say “we should have a clear position by the end of the year.”

He continued – “We have a newly-formed plastics team within the corporation. We manage our waste very well but we have an exciting opportunity to play our part in the overall reduction of plastic, which, it’s becoming clear for all to see, has such a negative impact on our oceans.

“There are three elements to this – we want to eliminate single-use, disposable plastic – such as straws and drinks bottles, and reduce the amount of plastic in the operations side of the business – chairs, bags, staff belts and shoes for example. We also want to influence our supply chain because we have to do this together.”

Time to change

As the world’s largest cruise line, Royal Caribbean currently boasts 24 ships – with the 25th, Symphony of the Seas® due to set sail in April this year, also taking the title of the world’s largest cruise ship.

Celebrity Cruises has a fleet of 12 – soon to be 13 – with the arrival of the spectacular Celebrity Edge® in November. Azamara Club Cruises will also take delivery of their third ship this August – Azamara Pursuit.

As it’s becoming increasingly apparent the impact that this type of avoidable waste is having on our environment – particularly our oceans – it’s certainly encouraging to see that change is indeed in the pipeline.
