Good news, fans of MSC Cruises! The ever-growing cruise line has recently announced plans to build a fifth Meraviglia-class ship, at a ceremony last week at the Saint-Nazaire shipyard in STX France. The as-yet-unnamed ship will be larger than any other MSC Cruises‘ vessel built to date – with only four ships at sea that are currently bigger.
She’ll be able to hold up to 6,335 passengers and will essentially be a larger version of the only current Meraviglia Class ship at sea – MSC Meraviglia.
What does the future look like for MSC Cruises?
The cruise line’s 10-year investment plan looks like it’s getting well underway, which will see them double their capacity by 2020 and more than triple it by 2026 – exciting times!
New ships for MSC Cruises
So, what do we know about the upcoming additions to the Meraviglia Class?
- MSC Bellissima will be christened in Southampton in March 2019, and will be the first ship to feature the industry’s first digital cruise personal assistant, Zoe, as part of a new feature of ‘MSC for Me, the company’s digital innovation programme.
- MSC Grandiosa will be christened in Hamburg in November 2019 and will showcase an even larger Mediterranean-style promenade that serves as the social hub of the ship with an array of shops, speciality restaurants and new bars and lounges.
- The fourth Meraviglia-class vessel will be called MSC Virtuosa, which underwent its steel cutting ceremony last Thursday (14th June 2018) and is set to sail in 2020.
- The most recently announced vessel is set to debut in 2023 and will measure 183,500 gross tons.
The cruise line currently operates 15 ships, and as part of their 10-year investment plan they’re in the midst of adding at least 10 more vessels to their fleet by 2026.
A new generation of cutting-edge environmental technology
Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman, said – “With the announcement of yet another new vessel, the 13th under our 10-year investment plan, we are affirming our commitment to sustainable growth for our Company. I say this while three more next-generation MSC Cruises are now simultaneously under construction.”
He added – “Our fifth Meraviglia class cruise ship will bring a new generation of cutting-edge environmental technology to the market, benefiting from a new generation of LNG-powered engines. This will help us further reduce our environmental footprint and advance in our journey of constant improvement. She will be joined at sea by up to four World Class LNG-powered ships, as part of our overall commitment to environmental stewardship through this and other next-generation technologies and solutions deployed fleet-wide.”
