Can you believe it’s almost been two years since P&O Cruises’ biggest ever ship – Britannia – was launched? How time flies!
Her Majesty The Queen, the vessel’s royal godmother, named the new ship on March 10th, 2015, in Southampton. She was accompanied by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and after the royal words “may God bless her and all who sail in her” were spoken, The Queen pressed a button that released a giant bottle of sparkling wine – equivalent of 20 regular bottles – to be smashed against the hull.
Still making waves
Two years on, P&O Cruises really have proved bigger is definitely better – after all, Britannia was built to be the largest ever cruise ship for the British market. The liner, which can hold 3,647 passengers, boasts one million pounds worth of art, nine entertainment places to keep the family occupied – including a 936-seat theatre – four pools, and 13 places to eat.
Britannia boasts the most popular features of the fleet, such as The Crow’s Nest Bar, Atul Kochar’s Sindhu restaurant, Olly Smith’s The Glass House, as well as brand new amenities. Adults can relax in the Oasis Spa & the Retreat, whilst the children enjoy the extensive facilities – including four age-group areas, a night nursery and an outdoor splash area for teens. For those who like to be kept active, you can explore the enormous 15 passenger decks and stroll around the largest amount of shops in the fleet – over an extensive at 700sqm.
During her first two seasons, Britannia has sailed to the Mediterranean, the Norwegian fjords, the Baltic, the Canary Islands and the Atlantic Islands. In winter, the ship operates 14-night Caribbean itineraries.

Great British Bake-Off judge Mary Berry has lead an extensive list of 10 celebrity chefs (including Pierre Koffmann and James Tanner) conducting cooking classes on the ocean, as well as hosting chef’s table dinners, book signings and Q&A sessions.
In 2016 the ship played host to Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, which was recorded and shown live onboard as the final show of the 13th series, broadcasting to over 8 million people.
