Scotland‘s Greenock Ocean Terminal had a very big visitor last week as it welcomed MSC Meraviglia into the port!

She became the largest cruise ship to ever dock at the port, carrying more than 5,000 passengers as part of a northern Europe itinerary that also takes in the likes of Dublin, Southampton and Le Havre.

MSC Meraviglia cruising into Greenock on the river Clyde

Andrew Hemphill, Port Director said – “We are pleased to be able to welcome the biggest cruise ship in terms of passenger numbers – the MSC Meraviglia – and her passengers. Her visit reaffirms Greenock’s position as the ‘cruise capital’ of Scotland and we are sure it won’t be the last time she visits.”

He also went on to say – “Ongoing investment has been crucial to the remarkable growth of cruise traffic to Greenock, allowing us to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for passengers. Year-on-year, we are building a major cruise business on the Clyde and, thanks to the success of Greenock, more people than ever before are taking a cruise to Scotland.”

A boost to the local economy

And with this super ship’s visit comes a spike in the local tourism, with Mr Hemphill commenting – “While about half of the passengers go on day trips to other Scottish destinations, many of them and members of the 1,500 crew visit and spend their time in Greenock, adding to the local economy.”

With so many cruise lines now choosing to visit Greenock – from the likes of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines to Princess Cruises, Cunard, P&O Cruises and Cruise & Maritime Voyages – there’s now more opportunity than ever to see the scenic sights of this truly lovely location.

The natural beauty of the surrounding hills and mountains, the shimmering River Clyde and the welcoming Scots piper upon arrival are all fabulous reasons to spend the day in this majestic part of Scotland.
