On the 4th July 1840, the great Cunard ship Britannia left her dock at Liverpool and sailed completely trouble free to Halifax, Nova Scotia, and onward to Boston. Every year since, Cunard ships have been criss-crossing the Atlantic for hundreds of voyages, through wartime and peacetime, without fail.
This means that 4th July 2015 will mark the 175th anniversary of that first journey and, to celebrate, Cunard will be running two very special events in the cruise line’s spiritual home, Liverpool.
Firstly, on the 25th May 2015, the “Three Queens” will meet for the very first time in the Mersey. Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria are three of the most iconic ships in the world, so it is bound it be a spectacular event. Thousands of people are expected to descend on Liverpool to give the ships a no-doubt enthusiastic welcome.
It will also be a very poignant event, as the meeting will take place near the Cunard Building, the cruise line’s headquarters for half a century from 1917 to 1967. With the first-ever voyage departing from Liverpool and the company being based there for such a long time, its only correct that celebrations are centred on this historic city.
Secondly, on the 4th July 2015, 175 years to the day of that very first voyage, the Queen Mary 2 will retrace the very same route that Britannia made all those years ago. The 10-day trip will include a stop at Halifax, Nova Scotia before sailing onward to Boston.
For the first time in 50 years, passengers will be able to board a Cunard ship in Liverpool and sail for the United States. Details of the voyage are yet to be announced, so if you would like to be a part of this historic journey, keep an eye on the CruiseDeals blog for updates!
The Cunard name is one of the longest standing in cruising history, and these historic events are bound to attract a lot of attention from the maritime and cruising communities, as well as the wider media. If you would like to be part of these special celebrations, consider making your plans for 2015 now!
