As the world famous cruise company prepare to celebrate their 175th anniversary, there’s more going on in the shipbuilding industry that is catching their attention. Composer, singer and activist Sting is set to perform the music from his new Broadway musical at Sage Gateshead in April 2015 and Cunard cruises are standing on the frontline, cheering him on.

The Broadway musical entitled ‘The Last Ship’ has generated great excitement from the North East of England’s ship building industry. Set in the small town of Wallsend, it tells the story of the demise of the shipbuilding industry and how it can impact on the identity and future of local communities. Having grown up in the small town of Wallsend, just a stone’s throw away from the Swan Hunters shipyard, it is a story close to Sting’s heart.

The story is also very close to home for Cunard Cruises, who created two of their most famous ships, Mauretania and Carpathia, at the Swan Hunter ship yard. As they celebrate 175 years since their first ship graced the seas, the musical represents their own proud heritage.  Sting’s new work digs deep into what the ship building community is all about, reflecting the great partnership with Swan Hunter shipyard that helped Cunard on their journey to creating some of the world’s best cruise ships.

All monies raised from Sting’s performances at the Sage Gateshead appeal will be fed back into the regions ship industry ensuring that its vital work will continue for years to come. ‘The Last Ship’ has allowed the shipbuilding tradition in the area to be recognised and the people of North Tyneside are working hard to ensure the iconic Swan Hunter shipyard continues to generate work, developing their advanced manufacturing sector and helping to secure the future of their young people.
