Exciting news! Celebrity Cruises have made a surprise announcement that they will become the first cruise line in the world to offer legal same-sex marriage at sea – effective immediately!
The news comes after Malta – where the majority of the Celebrity Cruises fleet are registered – passed a referendum vote in parliament to legalise same-sex marriage. This historic decision marks a fantastic day for the luxury cruise line, meaning the fleet’s captains can now officiate same-sex ceremonies on international waters. This long-awaited news will bring joy to many Celebrity cruisers, as the cruise line are well known for having a loyal customer base from the LGBTQ+ community.
P&O Cruises, Cunard and Princess Cruises recently announced that they’ll be offering same-sex ceremonies at sea from next year. However it seems that Celebrity Cruises have pipped them to the post!
Celebrity Cruises’ president and CEO, Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, revealed the news at a cruise industry event in Sydney, Australia saying “Celebrity Cruises has a long history of supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and I cannot think of a more important time in our history than right now to do all we can to support inclusion. I am absolutely thrilled to announce that starting today, we welcome same-sex couples to marry on our ships while in international waters. This is one for the history books!”
Barbara Whitehall, Managing Director of The Wedding Experience said, “Celebrity Weddings has already hosted many same-sex weddings in the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean, where legal. We are ecstatic that this new Malta ruling opens up marriage equality for anyone and everyone sailing with Celebrity Cruises while in international waters.”
What does their wedding programme include?
The ceremonies will be performed by the captain in international waters and include live music, one hour of photography, a bottle of champagne, cake for two, bouquet and boutonniere and even a romantic turndown service for the couple’s stateroom. An event coordinator will also provide their services to make sure everything runs smoothly on the day, which makes getting married at sea a great option for a truly laid-back and stress-free ceremony.
