Thinking of booking a post-summer escape? With warm, sunny temperatures still soaring around the world and crowds thinning after high season, September is a great time to book that cruise you’ve been waiting all year for.

At home, we may well be preparing for longer nights, rainier days and our winter wardrobes. Yet elsewhere on the globe, tropical summers are just starting and even destinations closer to home are still soaked in hot weather and long daylight hours. We reveal where to get your sunshine fix on a cruise, once summer in the UK comes to an end…

Santorini

Santorini’s shoulder season is the best time to visit this stunning Greek island. You can expect nice warm temperatures of between 24°C and 26°C, with occasional highs of 30°C. And that’s all with a guaranteed 11 hours of sunshine per day. Santorini is famous for its pretty whitewashed towns with rich blue rooftops, as well as gorgeous sunsets. Shore excursions through these winding streets are a must and once the crowds of high season have dispersed, it’s the ideal time to experience them. There are also Greek ruins, ancient settlements and volcanic beaches to explore, while the temperature is perfect for getting out and about.

As we touched on, the average September temperature is 24°C and luckily, the average September rainfall is only 11 millimetres. Long lazy days with good food and invigorating coffee are a local norm here that you’re very much encouraged to join in with.

Morocco

If you love the heat, Morocco is the destination for guaranteed toasty temperatures, enjoying 27°C on average and highs of 33°C. Agadir conveniently basks in 300 days of sunshine a year and there’s six miles of coast boasting powder-soft sands and translucent waters too. This is a sumptuous city of spires and mysteries, to say nothing of its neighbouring Casablanca, whose romantic trappings need no introduction.

With an average September rainfall of just six millimetres and around 9 hours of sunshine a day, Morocco is showing up on the itineraries of lots of exotic September cruises for a reason. As cruisers favour ever more exotic and eclectic destinations, Morocco has certainly become one to watch for, especially in terms of shore excursions with a difference.

Abu Dhabi

There’s hot and then there’s hot, so if you want both, this is the place for you! Home to vast empty deserts, stunning white beaches, glittering warm waters and year-round sunshine, Abu Dhabi is becoming increasingly popular as a cruising destination. The vibrant capital of the United Arab Emirates, it is a city of wonderful contrasts where luxury and style fuse with tradition and culture, captivating you with atmospheric souks, opulent hotels, fine dining and incredible shopping.

Blisteringly, the average September temperature for Abu Dhabi is 39°C and even that’s far lower than the highs you’d get in June and July. With an average September rainfall of 10 millimetres and daily sunshine of 12 hrs, expect blue skies and scorching adventures the minute you step ashore.

Cyprus

Said to be the birthplace of Aphrodite, the ancient goddess of love and beauty, Cyprus certainly lives up to her name. Golden beaches, historical sites and stunning landscapes make Cyprus the perfect destination for September holidays. The third largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus encapsulates the indulgent pleasures of the Mediterranean alongside its own unique and vibrant culture.

With 11 hours of sunshine daily, an average temperature of 24°C and rainfall averaging less than four millimetres for the whole month, September cruise deals give you the island at its best.

Italy

Italy is a country encapsulating all the indulgent luxuries we wish to experience on a holiday – world famous cuisine, the finest wines and thousands of years of history to discover. Made up of many stunning regions, Italy is perfect for cruisers that want to take in the cities, coastal escapes and rich, rolling countryside. Enjoy outdoor pursuits, stunning lakes and historical cities. Italy remains warm throughout September, being hotter the further south you go.

Even as autumn draws in, Italy always tops the bill for those of us asking where is hot in September. A lovely 22°C spread across days averaging eight hours of sunshine is sure to put a smile on your face and that’s before you even start sampling the food!

Oahu, Hawaii

Oahu is the perfect island for first-timers looking for a taste of Hawaii’s highlights. With vibrant city life and one of the most famous surfing spots, it’s Hawaii’s most popular and most developed island, blending modern life with ancient Hawaiian traditions. The North Shore is one of the best spots to watch some of the world’s best surfers take on the waves and it’s also home to Pearl Harbour, a must-visit area to gain an understanding of what happened during the 1941 World War II attack.

As you’d expect, a gorgeous daily average of 28°C with 10 hours of sunshine makes cruising to Hawaii an increasingly popular option as far as where to holiday in September goes.

Malta

There’s certainly no shortage of sunshine in Malta. This beautiful island in the Mediterranean has enchanted visitors for many years. The laid-back, easy towns are laden with quaint, cobbled streets and a year-round summer exuberance. The island has many archaeological sites and megalithic temples on offer, some of which pre-date the Egyptian pyramids! The surrounding waters are painted with a sparkling clarity and stunning shades of blue, making this mythical Mediterranean island a real late-summer treat.

Daily, you can expect nine hours of sunshine and an average temperature of 25°C, far more glorious than you’d expect of the weather back home.
