Picture this…

Barcelona is the most popular Mediterranean cruise port – and for good reason. With bags of history, culture, attractions, museums, delicious food and fantastic shopping opportunities, there’s absolutely no wonder this enchanting city sits nicely into most western Mediterranean itineraries.

Few European cities can offer you the wide diversity of cultural experience that you’ll find in Barcelona. Couple that with the luxury of 4.2 km of beach – only a short walk from the city centre – and warm sunshine for most of the year, and you have all the makings of a complete excursion in Spain.

Barcelona is a city of modern art – world famous painters and artists have likely worked here at some point in time, and their influence runs throughout the city. From Picasso to Miro, works of incredible artists are dotted around many of the galleries throughout the city. You’re simply spoiled for choice – there’s so much on offer to experience here.

Should you ever find yourself suffering from art and culture overload, then you can spend the day recovering on one of Barcelona’s sandy beaches, only a short stroll from the city centre. Order a Sangria at one of the bars and kick off your shoes, sit back and soak up the sun. Make sure to have a dip in the lukewarm sea and appreciate the stunning view of the Mediterranean before you.

Tapas, paella and sangria…

In Barcelona, food is taken very seriously. The local residents plan supper while eating lunch, and when planning a day trip, their most important concern is where they’re going to eat. Just ‘grabbing a bite to eat’ is not an option – in Barcelona, eating comes first!

Due to its proximity to the Mediterranean, Barcelona serves up stunning seafood dishes. You’ll also note neighboring influences from France and Valencia – the latter because Catalan cuisine includes a variety of rice dishes, variations on the typical Spanish paella. Meals can often be large but with many different courses, leading to the word Tapas. If you’re a proper foodie, you really are going to be spoiled for choice in this city. And after a meal, is there really anything better to wash it down with than the traditional Spanish sangria?

Los Caracoles is a cosy bar located in Barcelona’s Old Town, renowned for its delicious roast chicken – and it’s speciality Sangria recipe. They’ve even played host to a few famous faces over the years – including Robert De Niro and Bon Jovi!

Famous for…

If you know anything about sport, you’ll know that Barcelona is home to one of the greatest football clubs in the world – FC Barcelona. The 100,000 capacity Nou Camp is the largest sports arena in Europe, and sits in the heart of the city. You’ll likely spot the famous blue and burgundy colours on the shirts of proud supporters!

Along with the football club, Barcelona is home to the masterpieces of many great architects – the most famous of which is Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí’s work is admired by architects around the world as being one of the most unique and distinctive styles in modern architecture. One of his most well-known works, La Sagrada Familia, is a giant basilica which sits in the very heart of the city – this extremely recognisable building is probably on the front of that travel guide in your pocket!
