Discover the excitement of the aloha state on a cruise – go island-hopping, explore off-the-beaten track, take volcano tours and soak up the beauty of the Napali coast. Or simply relax on a local beach as you sip a Mai Tai! Either way – Hawaii should certainly be on your cruise bucket list for 2018. Here’s just a few of the reasons why…

Activities for the inner explorer

Hawaii is simply an adventurer’s dream. Go surfing like a local! No visit to Hawaii would be complete without some fun on the waves. Learn to manage a board at Chava Greenlee’s Surfing School, where one of Kauai’s professional surfers will have you ‘shooting the curl’ in no time. Or bike the road to Hana, a scenic stretch of highway showcasing lookouts, hidden beaches, tropical rainforests and an abundance of hidden Hawaiian treasures. If it’s adventure and adrenaline you’re looking for, Hawaii has it in large amounts.

Relax like a local

For a more tranquil experience, journey to the beach where you can relax on the beautiful sand of one of Hawaii’s famous hot-spots. Hawaii is often said to be synonymous with paradise – and these beautiful backdrops certainly live up to expectations. Set out on the water with a nature guide in search of humpback whales that spend their winters in the Pacific, and back on shore, enjoy a quick trip to the shops in Maui at Hilo Hattie’s – shopping mecca for all things Hawaiian.

Lunar landscapes

The islands of Hawaii formed millions of years ago from the power of volcanoes. On your Hawaii holiday, you can visit one of the few places in the world where people can come face to face with active volcanoes – at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Enjoy a day of scenic splendor and natural beauty, from the lush surroundings of sparkling Rainbow Falls to the dramatic presence of Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. Walk through the extinct Thurston Lava Tube, a cave formed by a river of lava, or take a thrilling helicopter ride to get a birds-eye view of this astonishing geological site.

Hawaiian cuisine

For the foodies, Hawaii is a culinary wonderland. The luau is an essential part of any Hawaiian cruise experience, and the cultural extravaganza at the historic Kilohana Plantation is a feast for all the senses. You’ll gather around a traditional fire pit and watch a roast pig emerge, a special treat to accompany the already lavish buffet of local delicacies and desserts. Think fresh fruits and plates full of colour! Whilst torches blaze, graceful hulas and energetic fire dances will entertain you, and the ancient sea voyages that brought the original Hawaiians to these islands from Polynesia will be brought to life in story and song.

Historic events

Hawaii is full of rich history – and for a few volcanic islands in the very middle of the Pacific, has had an eventful past! Founded by the Polynesisans who are claimed to have canoed there to settle (that’s a long way!), Hawaii’s first European visitor was Captain Cook – which ultimately didn’t end too well for him. Hawaii is also home to Pearl Harbour, the USA’s pacific naval base that was attacked in WW2 by Japan. It’s definitely worth checking out the memorial – it really puts history into perspective.

How can I get there?

Due to US regulations, most cruise lines will sail from Vancover, Canada to Hawaii – as it’s against passenger shipping laws to sail an entirely US based itinerary without calling in at least one foreign port. Norwegian Cruise Line solved the problem by launching Pride of America, a U.S flagged ship with an American crew, which can sail exclusively in the islands.

Another way of getting round it is by sailing from L.A and making a quick pit stop in Ensenada, Mexico, before carrying on to Hawaii. You’ll also likely find Hawaii to be an itinerary highlight on transpacific sailings from Australia or New Zealand, too.

Regardless of whether you opt for a short or long itinerary, Hawaii is bound to overwhelm you with its bounty of attractions and activities. Because a cruise can only give you a quick taste of island life, don’t be surprised if you return home and start planning a longer land holiday to your new favourite port of call!
