We’ve put together a list of must-have beauty essentials so you know what to pack for any cruise, covering hair, make-up and everyday products. Some are multi or mini products that don’t take up too much room in your cosmetics bag, many provide extra sun protection, and others we simply can’t live without.
A high quality sunscreen is a must whenever you’re travelling, and if you choose a light, spray-on lotion it can be used on your body and will be kind enough for your face too. It’s also a good idea to pack some after-sun lotion, just in case you do accidentally burn – ones with aloe vera in are particularly soothing and aid quick healing. To prevent your scalp from burning and protect your delicate face, take a sunhat with you. Floppy hats that are packable are the most convenient.
Bugs be gone
Some sun lotions contain insect repellent too, but if your favourite doesn’t you might want to think about a standalone product. Check whether any of your destinations are particularly prone to mosquitos and, if so, choose a spray that has DEET in for the best deterrent.
Don’t forget your toothbrush
If you’re a fan of an electric toothbrush but don’t want to pack a bulky one along with its charger, there are really handy mini electric toothbrushes on the market. Around the same size as a mascara wand, they run on AAA batteries and the power should last even for a long cruise.
Wipe it away
A pack of cleansing wipes can double up as a facial cleanser and make-up remover, but also has a host of other cleaning applications. With few nasty chemicals, use one if you accidentally spill some food on your clothes or to give your phone screen a quick buff.
A fine fragrance
There are so many special occasion opportunities onboard and onshore that you should definitely pack your favourite perfume to make sure you’re smelling divine. Take a travel size bottle with you and wear it when you’re eating at a speciality restaurant, watching a West End style show, dancing at the bar or overnighting at port.
To keep your make-up light, simple and ready for a day of adventure, swap your foundation for a lightweight CC Cream. One of the truly cruise-friendly cosmetics, it provides the benefits of a moisturiser, primer and foundation all in one, saving on precious suitcase space. CC creams provide coverage by colour correcting your skin tone of any redness or dark spots with light-diffusing particles, while many also have the added bonus of SPF and other skin-boosting ingredients. Another holiday essential, waterproof mascara won’t budge in humid climates or leave you with panda eyes after your dip in the pool.
Highlight your assets
A creamy highlighter stick will melt into your skin to give you a healthy glow. Get the look with a swish of highlighter on your brow bone, the bridge of your nose and the top of your cheek bones. Bronzer can also be used on your face and body, such as between your cleavage, to enhance your sun-kissed skin.
Bold lips can dress up your look in an instant – go for a long lasting formula and it’ll stay on your lips after all that eating and drinking. This will save you from having to re-apply your lipstick or any awkward lipstick on your teeth situations. And for the final flourish, choose a summery nail colour that’ll complement your tan. Just remember to take some nail varnish remover pads in case you have any accidental chips.
Extra care for your hair
When you’re dipping in and out of pools, saunas and air-conditioned rooms, your hair may need a little extra love. As well as your normal shampoo and conditioner, take a serum to tame frizz or a hair mask to restore moisture. If you can’t spare the space, the onboard salon can fix your hair in no time.
The wind blowing in your hair when you’re on deck can cause some pretty tough tangles. A Tangle Teezer or similar brush will put an end to any knots in your hair without damaging it. To put your hair up when you’re reclining on the Lido deck without snagging or leaving an unsightly kink in your hair, use hair ties like Invisibobbles.
Protect from damage
You’ve applied sun lotion all over, but don’t forget to protect your hair from the sun – especially if it’s coloured. For this you can use a convenient SPF spray, many of which promise to condition at the same time. Before you spray it on, embrace the beach-beauty look with a texturising sea salt spray to create tousled waves in your hair.
