Did you know that today is international “Talk Like a Pirate” day? While it might not be common knowledge among you “landlubbers”, we must admit that this is one of our favourite days of the year. We can dust off our wooden legs, put on our eye patches and spend the whole day talking in one of the world’s most popular dialects.

Just in case you won’t understand a word we’re saying, here is a little cheat sheet featuring some of the most common phrases. See if you can use all of them in your everyday conversation today!

“Ahoy me hearties!” – Why hello there, friends.

“Shiver me timbers!” – Oh my goodness!

“Avast ye varmint!” – Stop right there young man, because you are in big trouble.

“Weigh anchor! Hoist the mizzen!” – Let’s go, everybody.

“Pieces of eight” – Money

“Belay there!” – Stop there, please.

“No quarter given!” – We will never surrender.

“Land ahoy!” – It appears there is land up ahead.

“Blow me down!” – I can’t believe it.

“Avast there!” – May I have your attention, please?

“Aye aye, cap’n” – Why yes of course, boss.

“Shake a leg, now!” – Get on with your assigned task, please.

“Found meself a right load of booty” – I’ve found a great deal of treasure.

“Fair winds!” – Goodbye, and good luck!

“Arrr…” – Yes, or, I agree, or, I’m happy, or… a general murmur of contentment.

With these phrases under your belt, you’ll be well prepared for any chance encounters with “old sea dogs” you happen across on your cruise. While a cruise holiday is a very unlikely place to come across a crew of pirates, there is a lot to be said for being prepared. Besides, this is one language that is actually enjoyable to learn!

Have fun, me hearties!
