Good food is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and when you take a cruise you’re accepting an invitation to eat all of the world’s finest dishes in one sublime setting. Budding foodies the world over are making a point of booking cruises simply to find out which cruise line has the best food. While any cruise you choose is going to offer a superb variety of cuisine, we’ve got a soft spot for the following five cruise lines in particular when it comes to cruise dining options.

Royal Caribbean®

Royal Caribbean prides itself on catering to all kinds of tastes. Whether you fancy authentic, spicy Asian cuisine, a hearty Italian get-together, or some fine French dining, Royal Caribbean do an excellent job of providing a range of cuisine to world-class standards.

Dynamic dining

Dynamic dining is Royal Caribbean’s own take on the classic cruise ship dining room, but here guests can choose exactly what, how and when they eat. The idea of dynamic dining is to remove a lot of the formality that comes with dining on cruise ships. The best bit about this idea is the opportunity to try an amazing array of food, including genuine pub grub and craft beers at Michael’s Genuine® Pub, headed by award-winning chef Michael Schwartz. There’s also Jamie’s Italian, or fresh Japanese food at Izumi.

Anthem of the Seas® has no fewer than 18 dynamic dining choices, while such variety is also available onboard Quantum of the Seas® and Ovation of the Seas®.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Lines’ global perspective is fantastically represented in its food. With freestyle dining, you can mix and match your dining experience in whichever way you choose. Included in the complimentary options are meals in up to three main dining rooms, where the appetising menus are changed by the chefs on a daily basis. You can even dine alfresco with fantastic ocean views. There’s the Asian Fusion venue, as well as the hugely popular O’Sheehan’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill.

Norwegian Edge is for real foodies

If you’re a real foodie it’s worth upgrading to the premium Norwegian Edge programme. You’ll experience exclusive dining with enhanced menus and exciting new venues. Examples include Le Bistro, offering fine French cuisine with a modern twist. Elsewhere, seafood, steak and chicken are skilfully prepared on a giant grill at Hibachi.

Definitely give some serious thought to a cruise on Norwegian Jade, which has won awards for its dining excellence. There’s a wealth of flavours to enjoy, from all-American meats at Cagney’s Steakhouse to Brazilian spices and cheeses at Moderno Churrascaria. Another stellar ship is Norwegian Edge, which saw the debut of Los Lobos Cantina in 2016. Expect the latest twists on classic Mexican staples here.

Celebrity Cruises

Dining here is undertaken in stylish surroundings that frequently court praise from cruise critics. Celebrity Cruises offer mouth-watering food and fine wine to match, as well an overall fantastic culinary experience that will keep you coming back for more.

From the classic to the innovative

Whichever Celebrity Cruises ship you’ve picked, fine dining experiences will be at your fingertips. One of the best is the luxurious yet modern Murano, where you will discover a striking French menu to make you salivate. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, one of the most notable restaurants is Qsine. Order food from your iPad then tuck into ‘disco shrimp’, ‘sushi lollipops’ and ‘popcorn fish ‘n’ chips’. It’s worth investing in one of Celebrity Cruises’ speciality dining packages to eat well whilst enjoying big savings.

Celebrity Reflection® sustains the high calibre of food delivered by Celebrity Cruises. Many of the restaurants are complimentary, but it’s worth noting that the staterooms you opt for can give you access to particular venues – Blu, for example, is reserved for those who are looking for a more spa-like, health-conscious experience. Celebrity Silhouette® and Celebrity Eclipse® are also top-tier dining experiences that mix classic dining room chic with high-end experimental flavours.

Cunard has a reputation where classic chic is the order of the day. The dining rooms on Cunard cruise ships mix rich colours with equally rich flavours, ranging from steak and pasta to sushi. The kind of stateroom you choose matches your dining experience, so the Princess Grill, Queens Grill and Britannia Club dining options each match your namesake stateroom.

Specialised flavours

Onboard Cunard cruise ships, the option to visit either the Lido Restaurant or Kings Court is highly recommended. These specialised venues are where the menu expands massively, making this cruise line a firm foodie favourite. The dining space is taken over by various themes throughout your voyage, from South American spiced grilled meat in Asado through to delicate Asian flavours at Jasmine.

Cunard runs a tight cruise ship fleet, so all of the dining options we’ve described are available on Queen Mary 2Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. The speciality dining options can incur added costs, but the flavours make the experience worth it. Cunard also allows guests to prebook their dining slots before the voyage.

Thomson Cruises

Thomson Cruises promises first class service, in which the waiting staff make the effort to get to know you during your cruise. Fortunately, cruising with this line is as much about substance as it is style, because the meals to be had onboard offer great range and sublime flavours.

Dining with distinction

Thomson Cruises specialise in making the most of the experience, so many of its onboard restaurants are as much about the ambience as the flavours. Sirens Restaurant onboard Thomson Dream is a good example, offering simple but filling food on the top deck, tucked next to the adults-only pool. The most exotic flavours can be found in Kora La, the Chinese and Indian fusion restaurant available on many of Thomson Cruises’ ships.

While every cruise ship in the Thomson fleet boasts a sensational foodie experience, Thomson Majestyand the modern Piazzo San Marco deserves special mention. Panoramic windows are complemented by fine Italian flavours here, although it’s also fun to dine from the balanced menu of Meridian onboard Thomson Celebration.

Cruising for foodies is definitely on the up, and we’re seeing ever more inventive menus complementing our travels. Take a close look at the range of options available to you from your top cruise lines.
