What better way to celebrate Chocolate Week than with some some seriously sweet cruises serving up a sublime selection of some of the finest cocoa creations on earth?!
According to Princess Cruises, 70% of women crave chocolate more than sex as an ‘afternoon delight’. And a survey by the cruise line found that 53% of all Americans – including men – crave chocolate in exactly the same way!
Chocolate is arguably one of the nation’s biggest guilty pleasures – it seems we can’t get enough of it! If you’re partial to an occasional chocolate fix – or you’re even willing to admit to an acute addiction – then these are the cruises you need to find yourself on!
Chocolatier Norman Love has designed decadent hand-crafted treats for the cruise line’s Chocolate Journeys programme. The new fleet-wide 24-hour International Cafe has chocolate specialities including Milk Chocolate Mousse Caramel and Milk Chocolate Chantilly Eclairs, while each ship’s Vines wine offers premium chocolate and wine tasting. The chocolate drinks menu includes chocolate chili margaritas and chocolate salted caramel rum shakes. There are even chocolate spa treatments available at the Lotus Spa – the anti-oxidant chocolate body treatments are utterly divine!
Once a week on P&O Cruises’ ships, passengers queue up to take their pick from the all-chocolate buffet. It’s an afternoon tea like no other, with a large chocolate fountain at its centre and tables piled high with everything from chocolate eclairs and lollipops to bread and butter pudding.
P&O’s flagship Britannia also has a state of the art cookery school – The Cookery Club – where passengers can sign up for the ultimate chocolate lover’s class. This starts with a tasting session to teach you how to select and work with chocolate, before moving on to hands-on classes that involve making truffles using a ganache and liqueur filling. And among The Crows Nest bar’s Great British Gin Menu, you’ll find Ely Dark Chocolate Gin from Cambridgeshire. Tasty!
Award-winning French chocolatier and pastry chef Jean-Philippe Maury has been working with MSC Cruises on designs for a chocolate workshop onboard its new ship MSC Meraviglia, which launched earlier this year. The chocolate atelier has an open kitchen so that passengers can watch chocolatiers at work, with Maury also working with MSC to create a gourmet ice cream parlour and creperie in the ship’s indoor promenade – both featuring bold chocolate flavours.
Long regarded as one of the best cruise lines for outstanding cuisine, master pastry chef Christophe Menard has created some of the most tempting chocolate desserts at sea, using some of the world’s best chocolate from Tanzania, Venezuela and Papua New Guinea.
You’ll witness all-too-tempting creations such as Tanzanian Chocolate Cake with Molten Caramel – a rich chocolate cake drenched in caramel and served with vanilla ice cream, topped with a disc of Tanzanian chocolate (75 per cent cacao). Menard has also created Yuzu and Venezuelan Chocolate Moose with Hazelnut Croquant and a Papuan Chocolate Volcano with Passion Fruit Heart and Caramel Lava – if that doesn’t make you drool, we don’t know what will!
Oceania Cruises also offer Culinary Discover Tours as part of their list of extensive excursions – so get ready to discover a whole world of flavour in your chosen destination, too!
