Swap tinsel for toasty temperatures and ditch the snow for some sun when you spend Christmas in the Canary Islands! A cruise at Christmas is becoming more and more popular every year, with the Canary Islands being a firm favourite amongst the top destinations to head to.

If you’re after something different this festive period – or perhaps you’re already planning to have a change next year – then a Christmas cruise could be just what you’re after. Here’s six reasons why you should spend Christmas in the Canaries…

1. The obvious one – the weather

While temperatures at home dip dangerously close to zero (if not colder!) the Canary Islands still see toasty highs of 22°C. While everyone at home is scraping ice of their cars and wrapping up in their woollies you’ll be laying on a beach and strolling past palm trees.

You might see a speckle of snow – but only at the very top of Tenerife’s Mount Teide! The Canary Islands is a big-hit all year round thanks to its favourable climate, which still sees mild temperatures in our winter time. And with a much shorter aeroplane journey than the likes of the Caribbean, it’s the ideal place to head to for a winter warmer!

2. Christmas Dinner – taken care of

Everyone loves their grub on Christmas day – but not the stress of cooking it! Pans overflowing, timers buzzing from at least three machines and a distinct smell that something’s burning. Not when you cruise!

On a cruise that sails over the Christmas period, Christmas day itself is usually always a sea day. This means you can rise from your cabin whatever time you fancy, then be treated to a glorious array of festive food all day long.

Christmas breakfasts, a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and delicious puddings too – if you still have room! And the best part? You didn’t have to lift a finger.

3. All Inclusive drinks – to get truly merry!

If you set sail with Marella Cruises, you’ll be pleased to know they’re becoming an All Inclusive cruise line! As of May next year, every single one of their ships will offer All Inclusive as standard. That means a fabulous array of dreamy drinks all included in the cost of your cruise.

Say hello to beer after beer, as well as cider, wine, spirits and apertifs (including lots of big brands). There’s also a range of colourful cocktails like Long Island Iced Tea and Strawberry Daiquiris to take your pick from. Rack up that bar tab as much as you like – it won’t cos you another penny!

You’ve also got the choice of various restaurants to dine in at no extra cost too – what else is Christmas all about if not fantastic food and drinks? With a cruise, you’re guaranteed to be spoilt for choice!

4. A different Christmas culture

One of the best things about spending Christmas time in the Canary Islands is getting to experience how this holiday is celebrated in another part of the world.

You’ll come across different Christmas traditions, not to mention tasting new festive treats such as the Spanish favourite of Turrón, a staple sweet that’s eaten in abundance at this time of year. It comes in so many different variations – you can have fun trying your favourite flavours!

You’ll probably also come across other Spanish Christmas traditions around town squares, such as Beléns, which are elaborate nativity scenes. You’ll find one of the biggest ones in the world right on La Palma’s Las Canteras beach. Immerse yourself in celebrating Christmas in new and wonderful ways – it’ll definitely make it one to remember.

5. Fabulous Christmas festivities

There’s so much going on throughout the Canary Islands during the month of December and in the lead up to Christmas – you’ll feel in the festive spirit more than ever.

For one, the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra usually hold a free Christmas concert right beside the port, and there’s always top international musicals taking place at the Tenerife Auditorium.

On top of that you have fireworks displays, carol singing, and you can even hop on a camel in Gran Canaria to take a ride over the Maspalomas dunes. You’ll feel like one of the three kings!

6. Christmas markets

Get ready to fill your stockings with last-minute presents and souvenirs – each of the Canary Islands are host to some fabulous festive markets!

Tuck into tasty food stalls, listen to live music as you stroll through and bag unique presents. Whether it’s handmade jewelry or unusual prints by local artists, you’ll find something to take home.

The top markets include Tequise Market in Lanzarote, Teror market in Gran Canaria, Puntagorda Market in La Palma, Teguste Market in Tenerife and La Oliva Market in Fuerteventura.
