One of the best aspects of cruising is being able to explore so many different cultures and countries in one sailing. Mid to late April is an amazing time to hit the high seas – the celebrations of Easter allow you to indulge in different traditions and partake in celebrations like no other.

We’re not just talking about your regular chocolate Easter egg hunt, we mean exciting extravaganzas, weird traditions and world-wide events. Here are our top Easter destinations, with events and festivities that’ll blow you away!

France

Go big or go home is the expression most appropriate here – and it’s fair to say that in France, the bigger the better! On Easter Monday for the past 43 years in the city of Haux, a giant omelette is served up in the town’s main square. We’re not talking about any normal size omelette – this beast is made out of 15,000 eggs and feeds over 1,000 people! Everyone gathers to watch the gallons of egg yolk be poured into a large pan, before the Giant Omelette Brotherhood beat and stir it with extra long baguettes.

The event dates back to 1973, where the town’s shopkeepers decided to create the Brotherhood of the Omelette – a following which grows each year. According to the legend, it’s believed that in recognition of Napolean Bonaparte and his army spending the night near the town, the brotherhood created this crazy festivity to feed his army the next day. Certainly a story to tell the grandkids!

Spain

Easter in Costa Brava is certainly one to remember as they celebrate with the Death Dance. Tracing back to the days of the black plague, its a tradition that still lives on. Adults and children will dress up as skeletons and parade through the streets to the rhythm of drums ’til the early hours of the morning – if you have an overnight stay here, have fun following the procession! This is Spanish culture at its roots.

It was once known as a way to remind the locals that earthly pleasures would one day come to an end, and to take full advantage of your time on earth. The medieval old town of Verges provides a natural setting for the performance which takes place in the scenic space of the main square – the town walls and fortified medieval towers create the perfect backdrop. With only torches lighting  the way through the village streets, it’s certainly a sight to behold.

Greece

When the clock strikes 11.00am and mass ends – let the smashing begin! Locals will hang out of their windows or stand in streets throwing pots and all sorts of earthenware. It’s out with the old and in with new – according to Greek mythology this symbolises the welcoming of spring, with new crops on their way, they’ll gather new pots for their growing produce. Others say it scares the devil away – either way, its certainly a unique thing to witness!

Corfu’s old town in particular really pushes the boat out on Good Friday with parades, processions, live music and of course, pot-smashing in the town square. This event draws in quite the crowd – you’ll have a smashing time!

Miami

Easter brunch is a big deal in Miami – it’s the time to break bread with all your loved ones and fill your face with culinary treats. With everything from bottomless mimosas, burgers and sides of french toast – its the most important meal of the weekend. But this isn’t just any brunch, it’s elaborate spreads filled with goodies. You’ll find the restaurants in Miami really push the boat out to make your Easter brunch a gastronomic experience to remember. You’ll be stuffed!

After all that eggstravaganza, head to the Mega Egga at Jungle Island – offering three days of continuous egg hunts, rides, live music and visits from the legendary Easter bunny.

Amsterdam

Get ready for Amsterdam’s biggest street party – just after Easter, you can partake in the festivities of King’s Day. It’s a birthday celebration of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, and it’ll certainly make the end of April one to remember. With superb street parties, live music and a nationwide flea market, you’ll see Amsterdam in a whole new light. People empty their houses and set up street stalls to provide you with services – from massages to makeup and cakes!

With three million people attending, Amsterdam streets are lit orange with pride as locals and guests turn up to celebrate the royal family on April 27th. So pack your favourite bit of orange clothing and get ready to celebrate like never before!
