Barcelona is a city that’s never short exciting places to visit – in fact, you’ll struggle to fit everything in you want to do! Here are our five must-do shore excursions whilst in the Catalan capital – from top-notch art to tree-lined malls, you’re sure to have an out-of-this-world experience no matter what you do!
1. Museu Picasso
Pablo Picasso may have hailed from Malaga in the south of Spain, but he chose Barcelona, the city where he apprenticed as a young artist, as the location for his namesake museum. The setting alone, in five contiguous medieval stone mansions, makes the Museu Picasso unique. The pretty courtyards, galleries and staircases preserved in the first three of these buildings are as delightful as the collection inside. The collection, which houses 4,251 of the Spaniards works in sculpture, paint and engraving – is strongest on Picasso’s earliest years, which is appropriate considering that the artist spent his formative creative years in Barcelona.
2. La Sagrada Familia
If you have time for only one sightseeing outing, this should be it. La Sagrada Família inspires awe by its sheer verticality, and in the manner of the medieval cathedrals it emulates. It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic of this place, which, pending completion in 2026 after 150 years of construction, will be the tallest religious building in Europe. When completed, the highest tower will be more than half as high again as those that stand today. Although essentially a building site, the completed sections and museum may be explored at leisure. Lines here are notoriously long, so it’s advisable to purchase tickets in advance.
3. Camp Nou
Lover of football or not, you’ll still be impressed with the 100,000 capacity Camp Nou. The stadium, which boasts one of the most popular museums in the whole of Barcelona, offers guided tours every day – allowing you to explore every bit you don’t see on the TV. You may be lucky to be in Barcelona on a match-day, and in that case, get yourself here! See Messi, Suarez and Neymar up close for yourself and witness one of the greatest teams in the world in action!
4. Park Guell
Park Güell is Gaudí’s greatest triumph in urban planning and shows the sculptor at his most organic. Using the the foothills as his canvas, Gaudí designed an architectural park whose structures (houses, fountains, pillars, and walkways) often appear to be extensions of nature. Columns shoot up like tree trunks, arches are jagged like cave openings, and fountains are guarded by giant lizards with scales fashioned out of mosaic tiles. As you leave the monumental area and follow the steep, uphill path, let the sweeping views awaiting you at the top be your motivation.
The park is extremely popular – with an estimated four million visitors a year. Access is limited to a certain number of people every half-hour, and it’s wise to book ahead online – you’ll also save a bit on the admission fee.
5. Las Rambla
No visit to Barcelona would be complete without a stroll through Las Rambla, the wide, shady boulevard that runs through the heart of the city from Placa de Catalunya down to Port Vell. Whether you’re taking in a street performance, ambling beneath the trees or people-watching from a terrace, there’s never a dull moment here. To get a bird’s-eye view of all the action, finish your Las Rambla route at the 18th-story mirador at Columbus Monument, for amazing panoramic views of the city and sea.
