Limassol is a charming Mediterranean port with so much to offer, as well as being the gateway to other glorious regions throughout Cyprus. We’ve picked out the five must-do activities for you to do on your next trip here – so take your pick!
Aphrodite’s Rock and The Tomb of the Kings, Paphos
Here’s your chance to see Paphos, one of the most beautiful parts of Cyprus. Take in the world-famous Aphrodite’s Rock, where the goddess of love is said to have risen from the sea. You might get snap happy here – the views are simply out of this world! Whilst in Paphos, take a look at the underground Tombs of the Kings – a necropolis dating back to the 4th century BC. Interestingly enough, despite the regal title, no kings were actually buried here – just some wealthy aristocrats. But with their magnificent Doric columns and frescoed walls, they were, and still are, fit for royalty. If you venture into Paphos harbour, you’ll also find Paphos Castle – originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour.
Curium & Omodos
Some real gems surround Limassol – and this is your chance to see two of them. Head to the Greco-Roman site of Curium, perched on a cliff-top high above the sparkling Mediterranean. Take a look at the beautiful mosaic floors and the baths of Eustolios House, as well as the open-air theatre which serves up jaw-dropping views. Afterwards, make a beeline for the quaint village of Omodos – the superb local wine is a must-try, and make sure to buy some of the delicate lacework for which the place is well known. Wander the cobbled streets that wrap themselves around the Monastery of the Holy Cross – this charming location will capture your heart.
If you feel like stretching those legs and getting some unbelievable views at the same time, this one is for you! High in the mountains is the little resort of Troodos. A place to stroll at leisure, shop for souvenirs or just enjoy the fresh mountain air during your visit, it’s 100% worth it. From Troodos Square you can drive towards the Mount Olympus summit, where you’ll enjoy extensive views of the Mesaoria plane towards Nicosia and the north west coast of Cyprus. You might even spot your ship! For stunning scenes like no other, this region is a must-visit.
Secret Valley Golf Course
Itching for a game of golf? Mastered the ship’s mini golf course? Enjoy a round of golf overlooking the azure Mediterranean sea. Sit back and relax as you travel through the scenic southwest of the island and pass by picturesque plantations and vineyards on your way to Cyprus’s best golf course. The journey here itself is worthwhile – have your camera ready as you glide past lowlands littered with carob and olive trees, before reaching the coast. Set in a scenic valley surrounded by mature trees and beautiful natural rock formations, the prestigious Secret Valley Golf Course really doesn’t disappoint.
Nicosia has the distinction of being the last divided capital city in the world after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Dividing north and south is the Green Line, which runs directly through the city. The northern side has been occupied by Turkey since 1974, and the southern side by Greece. Nicosia is the largest city in Cyprus and has been its capital since the 11th Century AD. This remarkable location is encircled by old city walls, and has managed to successfully blend its bustling modern day business and cultural centres with its historic heart, all the while retaining its charming character. With must see museums, monuments and an array of culinary delights on offer, Nicosia is definitely worth a visit!
