Everyone who goes on a cruise knows that one of the best elements of the trip is the food. Whether it’s fine dining that requires you to be suited and booted, or stacking up madcap sundaes at the ice cream shop with the kids, nobody on a cruise ship ever goes hungry. Moreover, cruise lines are doing more each day to ensure that those among us with intolerances or specific dietary requirements can dine in style too.
Of course, part of what makes this possible is how cruise lines are ever more actively joining hands with some of the most famous and beloved celebrity chefs in the world. If you’re planning a cruise and are curious as to what famous faces might be behind the menus you’ll be enjoying at sea, join us as we reveal a few favourite celebrity chef cruises that are sure to make your mouth water.
Jamie Oliver onboard Royal Caribbean®
No list of the best cruises with celebrity chefs is complete without mentioning the cheeky chef who brought Italian cuisine home. While every Royal Caribbean cruise ship you could care to mention houses a sublime mix of Asian, Latin American and even homegrown British grub, it was the Quantum®-class ships of Royal Caribbean that first became home to Jamie’s Italian, at sea.
It means the dress code is casual, your surroundings take their cues from the Italian trattorias of old and that the menu bulges with delicious possibilities. It’s likely you’ve dined at Jamie’s Italian on dry land, but keep in mind that thanks to this partnership with Royal Caribbean, both the views and the dining experience as a whole is that little bit extra special. Three course meals here are affordable and boast starters brought to you on wooden platters, in the rustic tradition. Think arancini balls, breads and olive oils, tangy cheeses and the like. For mains, lasagnas and carbonaras are joined by richer options like truffle tagliatelle, prawn linguini and slow-cooked pork belly. Desserts appeal massively too, from gelato to tiramisu and all are backed up by recipes perfected by Jamie himself.
Roy Yamaguchi onboard MSC Cruises
MSC Cruises are already beloved for their wide ranging destinations and even more wide ranging dining options onboard their cruise ships. However, they are also entering the pantheon of celebrity chef cruises in style, with a new addition at the end of 2017.
Roy Yamaguchi, hailed as the inventor of Hawaiian fusion cuisine, has exclusively given his expertise to the new Pan-Asian Market Kitchen, first making its debut onboard the distinctive MSC Seaside. Roy’s Japanese heritage and Hawaiian flair mix superbly on the menus he has handpicked for his first-ever restaurant at sea, which is actually made up of three parts.
The first is an à la carte dining affair right atop MSC Seaside, replete with succulent seafood and spicy Asian dishes, together with rich and fresh sauces. The second aspect of Pan-Asian Market Kitchen is the teppanyaki grill, which in true commitment to tradition, sees talented chefs cooking up a storm right before guests’ eyes. For more refined palettes, the third element of the restaurant is a sleek and chic sushi bar.
Guy Fieri onboard Carnival® Cruises
Guy Fieri’s distinctive all-American flavours, onboard Carnival’s lively cruise ships, have brought the classic Happy Days style diners of decades past into the modern era. Onboard Carnival cruise ships, you’ll find Guy’s Burger Joint standing ready, by the poolside more often than not, with its sumptuous meaty, cheesy aromas wafting out into the open air. What’s more, you’ll also find Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse waiting to tantalise your taste buds. The best part of all is that both of these restaurants offer meals included in your cruise ticket price.
The Smokehouse is a counter service affair, laid-back to suit its comfort food menu. That’s not to say that the flavours here are scant though, as smoked chicken, pork and beef dishes hang heavy in the air as you contemplate whether to plump for lashings of ‘slaw or a heap of mac and cheese to accompany your thick chocolate milkshake.
Meanwhile, Guy’s Burger Joint stacks the patties high, layering them with chilli cheese, brown sugar barbecue sauce and onion rings aplenty. The venue’s also famous for its Donkey Sauce; a blend of mayonnaise with extra punch that’s based on one of Guy’s most top secret recipes.
Jose Garces onboard Norwegian Cruise Line
Jose Garces is an Iron Chef and one to whom good Latin food is as natural as breathing. Plenty of excitement surrounded his first forays onto Norwegian Cruise Lines’ ships and today, you can enjoy tapas and paella in his first at-sea restaurants.
Much like Roy Yamaguchi, Jose Garces has lent his considerable talents to two restaurants onboard NCL cruise ships. Pincho is a tapas bar and as such, is home to calamari and cheese platters. Serrano ham, soft tempting breads, olives, oils and anchovy treats are prepared before diners’ eyes at this à la carte venue. That said, Jose’s other concept, Bayamo, is also à la carte and offers big plates of Spanish and Mexican favourites, as well as scrumptious lobster. The desserts are a real treat too, with dense and rich chocolate coffee cake among the delights.
Curtis Stone onboard Princess Cruises
Leave it to Princess Cruises to get dining in style right. Inviting the Australian sensation that is Curtis Stone onboard their glamorous cruise ships has given their gastronomic offerings a tremendous boost in popularity.
Named Share, his distinctive restaurant features six course meals full of superb flavour. Salad starters, pork ravioli appetisers, lobster tail surf and lamb loin turf dishes and desserts like toffee cheesecake make for enticing reading as you peruse the menu. It’s an exclusive restaurant, although only insofar as it’s only available to guests onboard Princess Cruises ships, so you can expect a dining sensation here that will be a talking point with your friends, when you get home. Forward-thinking yet traditionally tasty at the same time, Share brilliantly sums up Curtis Stone’s individualistic cooking style.
Altogether, you can expect fine dining with celebrity backing however you want to cruise. Keep your dining options in mind as you explore the deals we can offer and we’re happy to share a few more inside tips with you as you look to refine your dream voyage with us.
