Our Port of the Month, Palma, is home to some amazing sights and as well as some truly amazing experiences. If you’re thinking of setting sail to the marvelous isle of Majorca, or your cruise itinerary includes this picturesque port, you’re in luck! Here are five of the best shore excursions this Mediterranean hotspot has to offer…
The Serra de Tramuntana
Say hello to the stunning mountain range that runs along Majorca’s northwest coast, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. This breathtaking sight is characterised by its defined peaks, as well as stoned terraces, water mills and plantations of olive and almond trees, winding their way along the curves of the coastline. The towns and villages that lie throughout the mountains are simply enchanting, and this picturesque location has even been known for inspiring many internationally renowned artists. Head on an organised tour or venture there yourself – either way, you can’t fail to feel the exceptional ambiance this region exerts.
Tour of Valldemossa
If you’ve made your may to the mountains, a stop at one of the prettiest villages in Majorca is well worth it along the way. Valldemossa is situated in the hills of the Tramuntana range – enjoy a pleasant stroll through the quaint cobbled streets with your knowledgeable guide. You’ll find craftsmen preparing baskets out of palm leaves, and if you’re visiting on a Wednesday then you’re in luck, as the weekly market here is the ample opportunity to treat yourself to Mallorcan delicacies. ‘Coques de patata’ is their pastry speciality! Make sure you visit the Cartuja too – a wonderful monastery from the 15th century.
Discover the island’s finest homemade wines on a local winery visit. These tours usually last around three hours, leaving plenty of time for other activities in Palma, too. You’ll venture into a postcard-pretty traditional wine estate nestled beneath the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, where your informative winery host will take you through the winemaking process, allowing you to venture into the production areas and the cellars. And of course, you’ll get to sample some of their most distinctive flavours along with some enticing Majorcan snacks. Don’t forget to pop into the winery shop – it would be rude not to take a bottle or two back to the ship with you, after all!
Love a bit of wet and wild action? Coasteering is the perfect activity! Combining adventure swimming, abseiling, climbing and rock scrambling into one action-packed activity, it’s an amazing way to get stuck into your surroundings. During your adventure you’ll abseil down rock faces, leap off high ledges into crystal-clear waters, check out a treasure cave for hidden treasure and negotiate the coast by learning how to climb. The locations are hand-picked so they are suitable for everyone – from first-timers to thrill-seekers, so you can challenge yourself as much as you want! The guides will ensure everyone in the family or group will have fun, and are able to tailor tasks to suit all ages and abilities. Get ready for a truly exciting escapade!
Sometimes, you just can’t beat a good old hop-on hop-off city sightseeing tour. With all the structure to allow you to see all that Palma has to offer, combined with the freedom to get on and off whenever you like, wherever you like, these tours give you ample opportunity to explore under your terms. Stop off at the famous statue of the Prime Minister, Antonio Maura, before making your way to Plaza de España – a large square offering spectacular scenery and culture. Plaza Mayor is the place to stop for delicious cuisine in an outdoor restaurant – the tapas here has to be top of your list! If you’re an art lover, the Joan Miró museum is certainly worth a visit too. You can even do an hop-on hop-off boat tour, too!
