Why choose a cruise to Mindelo?
With its candy-coloured houses, cobbled streets and picturesque harbour, Mindelo has a European feel. But it’s also the cultural capital of Cape Verde, especially renowned for its morna musicians, who play traditional music with haunting melodies and Creole lyrics.
There’s a lot to do alongside listening to music. Soak up local life at the market or enjoy stunning sunsets from the waterfront. A Mindelo cruise also places you within easy reach of some of the best beaches on São Vicente.
A guide to Mindelo’s hotspots
Wander down the cobbled alleys of the historic district, which are lined with brightly coloured colonial-era buildings. Rub shoulders with the locals in the atmospheric bars on the Rua Santa Antonio. Chances are you’ll hear a fantastic morna concert if you stick around long enough.
For a taste of local flavour, visit Mindelo’s municipal market – you’ll find stalls piled high with tropical fruits and vegetables, and there are plenty of souvenirs as well.
Take a trip to Laginha Beach, less than a mile’s walk from the city’s downtown area. You’ll be amazed by the icing-sugar sand and the inviting waters. Sheltered from coastal winds, this is one of the best places to swim on the island, and you can enjoy a cold beer in the beach bar afterwards.
Travel five miles from the city to hike up Monte Verde, São Vicente’s highest mountain. It’s carpeted in lush vegetation, and when you reach the top you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views of the island’s shoreline. It’s a great way to relax after the bustle of the city.
